Hello everyone! I’m sure you all are already busy with your spring break plans so we will keep our newsletter brief…. We had a simply Suess-tastic week! We read Dr. Suess books quite frantically all week and still have more we hope to read next week just for fun… our story time included The Cat in the Hat, Hop On Pop, Fox in Socks, Horton Hatches an Egg, The Lorax, Oh The Places You’ll Go, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and Wacky Wednesday (this one was definitely a favorite! It took us two different reading sessions to identify all the various wackiness in the illustrations, but we did it!). In honor of all this delightful rhyming nonsense and fun, we….
· created our own Loraxes
· made Cat in the Hat style hats
· created our own rhyming books
· learned how to play a Green Eggs and Ham board game
· played a fun game during which the students took turns drawing small objects from out of a bag and creating two rhymes to match the object.
· drew self-portraits of ourselves flying up up and away holding a bunch of balloons like the character in Oh the Places You’ll Go, using our fingerprints as the balloons! (those projects will come home soon as they are currently on display in our classroom.)
· had a SUPER Wacky Wednesday, complete with a room turned all topsy-turvy and shoes everywhere…. Just like in the book!
Other exciting things that happened this week included learning the spelling pattern “ing” (we use the phrase “king of ing” to remind ourselves how those three letters are read when they are next to one another), and learning the sight words “come” and “what.” Some of the students who are ready for a bit of a challenge have also started learning about contractions – “she’ll,” “I’ve,” “you’re” etc, creating a “contractions wheel” with our student interns Miss Olivia and Miss Emelie. And of course, we are hard at work reading, reading, reading!
Public service announcement: Several students had new books ready to go home to be read to an adoring audience, but we weren't able to send them home because the old book, and the all-important Book Buddy Bag marked with the child’s name, had not yet been returned to school. Please keep your eyes open during spring break, and try to return any outstanding Bags/Books next Monday! Thanks!
Last but not least, a big thanks to our Mystery Reader this week, Lily’s mom Ali, and our academic helper, Finley’s mom Sarah. The kids had a great time finding and sorting “ing” words with Ms. Armstrong! Thanks as well to Marni’s mom Andrea and Max’s mom Sheri for staying with the class during Teacher Lunch!
We hope everyone has a great and safe spring holiday!
Yay for math stations! See below for photos, and be sure to check out our Shutterfly account for even more fun from last week. :)
