Hello everyone!
First off, a big announcement! Our next field trip is scheduled for Thursday, February 19th! We will be going to see the rainforest show at the Center for Puppetry Arts… how perfect is that?! Stay posted for permission slips coming home soon, and if you are interested in driving / chaperoning please contact Hilary Nelson or Andrea Spear about that possibility.
Another big announcement…. Our class performance has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 24th at 10 am. Hurray! It is going to be awesome, and we are very excited. Mark your calendar and tell all the grandparents! ;)
Science:
In our science study, we have had a blast studying different animals from each layer of the rainforest. We studied jaguars (forest floor), snakes (understory), and sloths (canopy). Ask your student… are jaguars’ spots round? How do snakes manage to swallow prey that is much larger than they are? Do sloths cry? They should have lots of fascinating new knowledge to share with you.
In addition to learning lots of new facts, we also got to eat like a sloth (upside down and veeeerrry slowwwwwwly) and create several fun crafts…. snakes patterned with pasta, illustrations of sloths, and parrots made of toilet paper rolls. Next time you come by school, be sure to check out our awesome new 3D bulletin board, festooned with all our rainforest artwork!
Math:
The last week and a half of Math saw us focusing on a range of topics including: addition and subtraction number stories; sequencing events; sorting by different attributes and recognizing that two digit numbers represent groups of tens and ones.
We looked at addition and subtraction stories where Mrs K tried to catch us out and see if she could fool us into thinking they were addition when they were subtraction and vice versa. She did not succeed!!
We sequenced our days and found that not everyone gets ready for school the same way. Some of us brush our teeth before breakfast and some of us brush our teeth after breakfast.
We played a sorting game where Mrs K caught some of us and we had to guess what her rule for catching us was. There were all sorts of rules from people wearing purple to the color of our eyes and the types of shoes we were wearing.
We then played a game on the computer where we read two digit numbers and sorted them into groups of tens and ones. We will continue to revisit all these skills through our Math Stations.
To round the week off we had the 100th day of school, making yummy fruit loop necklaces and taking part in a range of activities involving counting to 100. We then finished the week off by using our actual feet to measure each other. We will talk about the standard way of measuring with feet that are not are own soon!
Our Math Stations over the last week include:
Literacy:
We began a new unit of Writer’s Workshop this week! We have finished our “teaching books” unit and have now begun working on writing “stories about our lives.” We are already impressed by how much the students’ writing skills have grown over the last few months!
In other news:
Can you believe it has been 101 days since the beginning of school? We sure can’t! We had a fabulous time celebrating the 100th Day of School yesterday, with lots of “one hundred” themed crafts and activities. We also got to have a special hot chocolate story time in the library!
Thanks so much to our Mystery Reader this week, Beckett E’s dad Mike! A big thanks as well to our Academic Helper, Ella’s mom Hedy, who helped us make our parrot craft!
Below are some of the photos of our 100th day crafts and activities. Be sure to check out our Shutterfly site for other photos from the week! And have a great weekend everyone!

Our Math Stations over the last week include:
- Playing Pop to the shops with Mrs K - this game focused on skip counting in tens and recognizing dimes. We had to fill our baskets up with items and go buy them at each other’s shops. Every item was priced in a multiple of 10. We had milk for just 20c, bargain basement prices. Very exciting as we used real money!!
- The Ladybug addition game - where you spin one spinner and put ladybugs on a leaf and spin a second spinner and repeat. You then add the ladybugs together to see how many you have.
- Counting and matching snowflakes - where you use tweezers to pick up a set amount of snowflakes (in this case cotton balls!) and put them in the matching cup.
- Roll a robot - where you roll a die and you color the corresponding shape, for example if you roll a one you get to color a square
- ipads - this week we focused on counting objects
- Tens and ones matching - where the children had cards with ten sticks and one cubes and had to write the matching number
- Subitising practice in the sand - where children copied cards with die dots by putting gemstones in the sand and writing the corresponding number in the sand.
- Rainforest number puzzles from the teens to the twenties - where the children put together number puzzles of rainforest animals
