Literacy:
Our new sight words this week practiced Bossy R and the “ow” sound – “more” and “how.” We finished reading our Magic Treehouse book High Tide in Hawaii. Our last few practice books went home with some of the students this week – thank you for your promptness in returning them!
Science:
We had a BLAST making our own aquariums out of paper plates! The kids filled them with hand-drawn representations of many of the creatures we have studied, from jellyfish to sharks, and we added a few foamy stickers to make them extra special. We continued expanding our knowledge of the ocean through books and videos, and were mesmerized by the sight of the coral reef and the schools of fish that populate it.
Math:
This week we continued our work in using the strategy of counting on in order to figure out number bonds. We found that we can do this using both our fingers and objects, keeping the first number in our head and counting on until we get to the number we want. We also used the strategy to count more of our rainforest fund. And the grand total is…. drum roll please…..$109.43!!! And yes the children still remember that 4 quarters make a dollar, yay!!
We revised a number of topics that we have covered this week including how to write the symbols for money and looking at telling the time to the half hour. We have time to the hour down pat, as you can seen by watching our Hip Hop around the clock video, but need some more reminding of the positions of the clock hands when telling the time to the half hour. This is a first grade skill anyway!!
Our new Math word this week was sum. We learnt that sum means the total of two or more numbers. So, the sum for 2+3 would be 5. We will be using this in calendar over the last few days so we can try to add this word to our Math vocabulary!
Our addition and subtraction books have been incredibly popular but unfortunately time has run out on us. So while everybody will have a turn taking either one of these books or our Space book home, we do not have enough time for everyone to take every book home. However, the books will be in the class and the kids will have plenty of opportunity to look at them here. Yay!!
Our Math Stations were a continuation of last weeks as we had several special activities this week such as a 3rd Grade principal!!
In other news:
Thursday was EXTRA fun because our Principal-for-the-Day Isaac Laurie (whose family won the auction for the privilege at Elliott’s Evening) got to decide lots of special things for us to do…. From a relay race game that Kol and Ella got to represent our class in (awesome playing Kol and Ella!), to cartoons and a special snack, to a sneak-peek viewing of the Spring Concert. AND extra playground time and free time too! So much fun we could hardly handle it…
Big news, at long last! As you just read in the math section, after much patient counting on the part of Mrs. K and our studious little math students, we have discovered that we collected $109.43 for the rainforest!! Since $50 protects 1 acre of rainforest, that means we will be able to protect just over 2 acres…. or, more than 87,000 square feet! We think that is positively amazing! Big thanks to all of you for helping us make a difference in the future of our planet. :)
Have a fabulous long weekend!
