Wow, it was another whirlwind week! We packed a lot into our four days of school this week… lots of fun for the Happening, plus Halloween crafts and stories galore! On top of that, we sang (beautifully!) for Ambassador Young, attended a jump rope exhibition, and of course, paraded around campus decked out in our Halloween finest.
Our study of games around the world has been super fun – in addition to the British games “Walk the Plank” and “Tummy Ache” that we have been playing with Mrs. K during Creative Explorations, we also learned a game from Australia called “Skippyroo Kangaroo” and an Indonesian hand-game along the same lines as “Paper, Rock, Scissors” called “Semut, Orang, Gajah.” A handout explaining both of these games came home with your child today -- “Skippyroo Kangaroo” was the clear favorite of the class so far. Stay posted to hear about games from India, China, and Nigeria too! Check our bulletin board for fun photos of our global explorations so far, pinpointed by location.
As part of the Happening we also got to attend an awesome jump rope exhibition on Thursday, featuring students from Morris Brandon Elementary. These students did all sorts of fun and fancy tricks with jump ropes, and impressed us very much with their skill and athleticism.
Halloween was an exciting day for us, featuring special spooky reading time with Mrs Zupancic, a movie, and a homemade Halloween treat provided by Annette Florence… sugar cookies beautifully decorated with icing spider webs, complete with chocolate icing spiders! Big thanks as well to our awesome costume helpers, Tiffany Egge, Hedy Marks, and Sarah Armstrong. We were also very lucky to have Barry Medintz acting as our personal class photographer… We can’t wait to see the fabulous shots he captured of our adorably costumed munchkins, and appreciate his time very much.
Thanks as well to our Parent Academic Helper this week, Virginia Kyle, who not only supervised a literacy game during workstations on Wednesday, but also helped with our foam-pumpkin craft. PS Glitter glue can take a really long time to dry, so your child’s craft might not have come home yet… it will next week though!
Happy birthday to Max Maher, who turned six this week! We have a great time seeing Max's parents and meeting his grandparents, while we enjoyed homemade cookies and read some great books.
For parents who might not have been able to attend the event honoring Ambassador Young (or for parents who just wanted to relive the glory one more time! ;P) I have posted a video of our musical performance here. Enjoy!
Just a quick note – I really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we transition to a new assistant teacher in our room. We are certainly missing Mrs. Mock – and the students have been working hard on very sweet notes and cards to let her know that! – but we also know that the teacher who will be joining us is going to be a great fit and asset to our class community. That exciting announcement will come from Miss Polly very soon!
I hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween evening, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at conferences next week. I can’t wait for the chance to brag on all of the amazingly smart, sweet, awesome kiddos in our class! Conferences will also be a great opportunity to for you all to meet our new assistant teacher. All that to say, if you haven’t already, be sure to sign up for a conference slot! You won’t want to miss it. ;)
All the best,
Ms. Louderback
